Image: Getty Images The NBA regular season doesn’t start until Tuesday, but San Antonio Spurs coach Gregg Popovich has already dominated an opponent — in this case, President Donald Trump.  After Trump made the outrageously false claim that former President Barack Obama didn’t contact the families of fallen troops, “Pop” went off when talking to The Nation‘s Dave Zirin.  SEE ALSO: Why Gregg Popovich is such a powerful critic of Donald Trump The five-time NBA champion coach and U.S. Air Force veteran said Trump’s comments were “so beyond the pale, I almost don’t have the words.” Almost is the key […]

Image: Getty Images If his approval rating isn’t registering and Donald Trump needs help determining who is not on his side of history these days, he can look for answers in Marshawn Lynch’s wardrobe. The Oakland Raiders running back, known just as much for his on the field antics as he is for his playful treatment of the media, was spotted wearing a shirt with a strong message ahead of Sunday’s game against the Denver Broncos: “Everybody vs. Trump.” It’s a loud and clear statement, particularly in the face of dissent between Trump and NFL players who are Kaepernicking (or […]

Taking a knee during the national anthem is upsetting some DirecTV customers.Image: Patrick Smith/Getty Images) Ignorance is bliss, especially when it comes to free speech at football games.  That’s what Trump supporters and other football fans who can’t handle sports activism seem to think. For the football fans who claim they are bothered seeing athletes standing up (or rather, kneeling) for the right to protest, DirecTV is caving with refunds to their sports package, the Wall Street Journal reported. Image: WFAA Dallas sportscaster Dale Hansen is a fixture of the sports media scene, and his “Unplugged” segment on ABC affiliate WFAA has never shied away from the sometimes-insidious politics of the sports world.  On Monday, Hansen nailed it again, defending the #TakeAKnee protests that swept the NFL last weekend in a clip that’s quickly becoming required viewing on Twitter.  Most notably, he refuted the notion that a protest during the national anthem is inherently disrespectful to veterans. (Hansen served in Vietnam.) SEE ALSO: Colin Kaepernick, shunned by the NFL, named Week 1 MVP by the player’s union “My best […]

Thirty-two Denver Broncos players took the knee on Sunday.Image: John Leyba/The Denver Post via Getty Images An unprecedented number of NFL players kneeled or otherwise protested during pre-game national anthems this Sunday after Donald Trump spent his weekend feuding with the league over the peaceful act. The hashtag #TakeAKnee (and a variant, #TakeTheKnee) trended on Twitter all day Saturday and Sunday as players and some team owners and front offices defied the president’s repeated attacks with public statements and on-field shows of solidarity. And despite players’ repeated explanations of the intention behind their decision to kneel or raise a fist, […]

David Ross’ career will end this week.Image: Russell Lansford/Getty Images The 2016 World Series is a spectacle of youth, a chance for Major League Baseball to introduce its new wave of bright-eyed superstars to the world. Javier Baez (23) has dazzled viewers with his defense. Francisco Lindor (22) has notched a .421 batting average the best of any hitter in the first five World Series games. So in a series dominated by youth, it’s puzzling that a 39-year-old is the talk of the town. As Major League Baseball introduces its baby-faced superstars to the world, it bids goodbye to Grandpa […]
