The web portal now says all 3 billion Yahoo accounts were compromised in the breach. The company initially said only 1 billion had been hit when it first disclosed the hack last December. Apple fans finally have their hands on the iPhone 8, but two owners in Asia have already busted their new phones under strange circumstances.  An iPhone 8 Plus owner in Taiwan says that her five-day-old 64GB device split open while charging, according to The Next Web. The owner claims she was using the official Apple charging cord, and after about three minutes, the phone started swelling, and she pulled it off the charger.  Another iPhone 8 Plus owner in Japan also claims his phone started splitting open. The weird thing about his story is that he didn’t even have an […]

Today’s retail launch of the Apple iPhone 8 and 8 Plus is a crucial test for Apple’s riskiest iPhone strategy. For the first time, Apple introduced its latest iPhone upgrades while simultaneously teasing something better coming soon — what, by Apple’s own admission, is “the future.” SEE ALSO: Here are the first photographer-shot iPhone 8 pictures Apple’s iPhone 8 and 8 Plus are, based on my review and what I’ve seen elsewhere on the web (and even in teardowns), “S” series devices in full-number-update clothing. Except for the glass back, the handsets maintain the iPhone 6 design introduced in 2014. […]

Steve Jobs Theater is empty. Hours earlier, the massive lobby, demo area (or foyer) space below, and theater were humming with Apple employees, media, analysts, and invited special guests, all jostling to touch the new iPhone X, iPhone 8, 8 Plus, and Apple Watch Series 3.  SEE ALSO: iPhone X: Hands on with Apple’s stunning new device Now, I stood alone in the vast open space, itself inside Apple Park (Steve Jobs’ version of Disney World), positioning myself dead center under the single-piece 155-foot metallic carbon fiber roof. I felt so small. Then I trotted back to the periphery. The […]

Image: Google The Google Chromebook just went to the next level. In a hardware-filled event, Google announced Wednesday a new high-end Chromebook called the Pixelbook (just as was rumored). Similar to the two generations of Chromebook Pixel laptops that Google began shipping in 2013, the Pixelbook defies Chromebook orthodoxy by boasting serious specs… and an even more serious price tag, starting at $999. SEE ALSO: Google’s new Google Maps feature will make parking less of a nightmare You get some nice perks for that price tag, though. For starters, the Pixelbook has a touchscreen, and now that Android apps run […]

A resident checks her cellphone on her rooftop at dusk about two weeks after Hurricane Maria swept through Puerto Rico.Image: Getty Images The FCC has given Google permission to deploy its Project Loon balloons over Puerto Rico.  Previously, the helium balloons were able to provide LTE coverage to Peru after extreme flooding. But in that case, Google had already partnered with a telecom provider on the ground, which it depended on to beam the signal to the balloons, for disaster relief. In Puerto Rico, Google’s innovation lab, X, is starting from scratch. It’s unclear if Puerto Rico’s stressed telecom companies […]

Put it on there.Image: apple The excitement of Tuesday’s Apple Event isn’t limited to the iPhone X.  Phil Schiller, senior vice president of worldwide marketing, took the stage to unveil the future of device charging — at least as far as Apple is concerned.  It’s called Airpower, and it’s the company’s first big move toward wireless charging.  SEE ALSO: The Apple Watch Series 3 is here, has cellular connectivity, and is kinda boring “It’s a mat that you place your iPhone 8 or iPhone 10 down and it just starts to charge,” Schiller told the crowd. “You can place your […]

Zuckerberg in his classic uniform. (Photo by Michael Kovac/Getty Images for Vanity Fair)Image: Getty Images for Vanity Fair Let’s just say it: Mark Zuckerberg dresses horribly, and he should be ashamed every time he appears in public. Here is a man in charge of the world’s most important social network — one that probably ended American democracy as we knew it! — and thanks to a general acceptance of his limp-ass techno-bro privilege, he gets away with wearing the same ugly T-shirt and jeans whenever he steps outside. It’s a uniform that says “I’m better than you,” an astonishing hubris […]
